Lyrics (Extended album Versions)

A Merit Badge is Just Like a Cat

INTRO

Um, yeah?
Well, thank you for inviting me to the Regional Grammar Scout Merit Badge campfire concert.
I’m a preposition. When it comes to parts of speech, I’m… one of the kinds!
I’ve got a big heart, a big mouth, and a big mind!
That was cool.

Hit it Scout Troop #472

VERSE 1

I need to sing a song about myself
To earn my Grammar Scout Merit Badge.
So gimme help (Gimme help)
I’m a Preposition, and that means this:
I’m pre-positioned for greatness.
I start the phrase, I got my map
And I can tell you where to go. (Where to go)

Yeah I’m a leader, my name is Lil’ Pete.
And I will help you get across the street.

CHORUS 1

And it’s not just about my Merit Badge.
‘Cause my mom said if I earn the badge
then she’ll go to the store with me and get that cat.
So can I place your things in time or space
Or show a logical relationship, help you communicate.
Oh and hey!
Did you know that slugs have four noses?

VERSE 2

Like, a preposition like me
Is a really important word and that’s not braggin’
It’s just the truth. (It’s just the truth)
I can help you place something in time,
Like before or even after nine.
Or I can place your stuff in space,
Like that cat’s stuck in the tree.
Climb down the tree!
You see...

There’s one more thing I gotta say:
I make logical connections go your way, like

CHORUS 2

A Merit Badge is just like a cat.
And you may think they’re unlike each other
But they take the same work,
So you’d be wrong about that.
I’ll place your things in time or space
Or show a logical relationship, help you communicate.
Oh and hey!
Did you know that bats always turn to the left
Upon exiting a cave?
That’s not even about prepositions
Although it does use two of them:
To and upon.
It’s not even part of the assignment
It’s just something I wanted to throw in there
‘Cause it’s cool.

Bridge

And you can string a bunch of Prepositions together, watch:
I was in the car with my troop before the concert and we stopped across the street around six o’clock or maybe after six-fifteen for the bathroom at the service station -- Yeah!
(The service station, yeah!)
That was the situation, yeah! (That was the situation, yeah!)
This song’s a revelation, yeah! (This song’s a revelation, yeah!)
In preposition nation yeah!
Hey! Did you know that children grow faster in the springtime?

VERSE 3

One more thing I can tell you
Because I know it. (Because he knows it)
And that’s that Prepositions can be compound. (Can be compound)
And that’s when prepositions are more than one word
But they still have a right, yeah, to be heard.
Like according to, in case of, by means of
Apart from or due to (Or due to)
It’s too true
So now you’ve heard my singing flavor
In addition to my good scout behavior.

CHORUS 3

May I remind you:
It’s bigger than the Merit Badge
‘Cause my mom said if I earn the badge
then she’ll finally go with me and get that cat.
So can I place your things in time or space
Or show a logical relationship, help you to communicate.
Oh and hey!
Did you know that I have two backpacks? And one is exactly the same size as the other, except one of them has Phineas McBoof on it and the other one has Action Verb?
Or that the total biomass of all the ants on the planet is roughly the same as the total biomass of all the people on the earth? Did you know that a duck has three eyelids?
And that most koala bears sleep about twenty-two hours a day?
I knew that.

So did I get my Grammar Scout Merit Badge?
Or is it time for my go-to pouty face?
