About The Mayor

Coert Voorhees taught 7th grade writing and grammar for six years. He is the award-winning author of several books for children and young adults, including THE BROTHERS TORRES (2009 American Library Association Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults), STORM WRANGLER (2011), and LUCKY FOOLS (2012). A former Fulbright Scholar, he holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Houston, and he spent a year as the Visiting Writer in Residence at Rice University. In addition to his mayoral duties, Coert serves on the Children’s Museum of Houston Advisory Board and the Board of the Henry Strong Educational Foundation..

Somewhere along the line, he developed a passion for grammar, and he used that passion to win the Grammaropolis mayoral race in a landslide. Actually, that passion was so unstoppable that he ran uncontested.

Grammaropolis is based on Coert’s most successful lesson plans from his time in the classroom.
