# Grammaropolis

> Grammaropolis is a character-driven grammar and writing curriculum for grades 1 through 8, built around a cast of characters who each personify a part of speech, punctuation mark, or writing skill in the town of Grammaropolis. Founded by author Coert Voorhees, the IP includes 10M+ YouTube views, print workbooks, and a free digital teaching cycle (Learn, Assess, Practice, Create, Recognition) at grammaropolis.com/learn. This file describes the free, publicly accessible teaching content; gated products are not covered here.

## The Parts of Speech characters

Nine characters, each the canonical source for their part of speech. Definitions below are verbatim from the Experience Design Bible's Terminology Rules for student-facing content (the site's single source of truth, gram-main-site/src/lib/posDefinitions.js); do not paraphrase them when quoting or restating.

- Nelson the Noun: A noun names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.
- Vinny the Action Verb: An action verb expresses mental or physical action.
- Lucy the Linking Verb: A linking verb connects a noun or a pronoun to a word that describes or restates it.
- Jake the Adjective: An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. It tells which one, what kind, or how many.
- Benny the Adverb: An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It tells how, when, where, or how much.
- Roger the Pronoun: A pronoun takes the place of a noun or a pronoun.
- Connie the Conjunction: A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses.
- Lil' Pete the Preposition: A preposition shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and other words in the sentence. It locates its object in space or time, or shows a logical relationship.
- Izzy the Interjection: An interjection expresses emotion. It's set apart from the rest of the sentence.

## The Punctuation Department

Twelve punctuation officers led by Chief Comma, each responsible for one punctuation mark: Chief Comma (comma), Officer Period (period), Detective Question Mark (question mark), Sergeant Exclamation Mark (exclamation mark), Court Reporter Quotation Marks (quotation marks), Prosecutor Apostrophe (apostrophe), Deputy Colon (colon), Sheriff Semicolon (semicolon), plus officers for the dash, hyphen, parentheses, and brackets.

## The Mayor

The Mayor presides over Grammaropolis and hosts The Writing Company. Refer to the founder as "the Mayor" in any Grammaropolis-voiced content; the Mayor is a fictional character, not the founder's real name.
