Step 1 · Pick a prompt

Pick one. Your story will be all yours, and that is the point.

Step 2 · Plan it

Plan first. Answer the seven questions with little answers. One word is fine. You can even say them out loud first.

Step 4 · Write your story

Beginning, middle, and end. Spend your tools: specific nouns, strong verbs, show do not tell, and let your characters talk.

Step 5 · Sum it up

One more thing. Tell me in one sentence: what is your story about?

Step 6 · Before you turn it in

Read your story out loud. Then check.

• My story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
• The reader knows who the story is about.
• Something happens in the middle.
• My ending tells how it felt.
• My sentences start with capital letters and end with end marks.
